Oakland, Maryland
The town of Oakland is 11 miles east of Alpine Lake Resort. Here you’ll find restaurants, shopping, pharmacies, a hardware store, and the closest major medical facility (Garrett Regional Medical Center). Get your essentials at Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, or Sheetz.
Boutique shops, antiques, a book store, and the B&O Railroad Museum are located in historic downtown Oakland.
Looking to add to your expensive glassware collection? Head to the Simon Pearce factory for shopping and glass blowing tours. Do not bring the small kiddos to this one!

Swallow Falls State Park

This mountain park is located nine miles north of Oakland, Maryland and contains some of Maryland’s most breathtaking scenery. The Youghiogheny River flows along the park’s borders, passing through shaded rocky gorges and creating rippling rapids. Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 53-foot waterfall – a spectacular sight. Tall hemlocks dominate the silent woods. The 1 1/4 mile trail through Swallow Falls guides hikers to some of the most breath-taking scenery in Western Maryland. Hours: 8 am to sunset.
